If you think moving from Yahoo and Microsoft’s mail to Gmail could save you from getting spammed, think again.

Report by email security vendor, MessageLab indicated that Gmail spam doubled last month; from 1.3 percent to 2.6.

Security vendors believe that the same group of spammers who cracked Microsoft’s Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart or CAPTCHA is responsible for cracking the Gmail’s filter system.

The spammers are believed to go to the extent of not only creating software to crack the security codes but also hiring employee to solve the codes all together.

Security vendor, Websense also found out that the spammers were using two hosts to crack Gmail’s CAPTCHAs. The method seemed to be successful about 20 percent of the time. The procedure however, if repeated time and time again, new accounts can be generated and then used to send spam email.Most of the messages are being sent to advertise adult entertainment sites using links and images.

Google’s CAPTCHA system is considered one of the hardest to crack, but so was Yahoo’s back then. MessageLabs said 88.7 percent of the spam from free Web mail providers are now coming from Yahoo’s domains.

Perhaps it’s only a matter of time before CAPTCHAs are comprehensively defeated.
