Facebook was asked by the Scrabble makers, Hasbro and Mattel to remove its famous game, Scrabulous from its site. Hasbro and Mattel acted on this because Facebook has infringed the copyright of the board game.
Scrabulous is currently the most popular application on Facebook with an approximate 500,000 active players every single day. Scrabulous was actually not created by Facebook but an initiation by two Kolkata based software developers, Rajat and Jayant Agarwalla. Facebook allows users to add-on their own program to their profile hosted by Facebook.
Fans of Scrabulous protested against this and raised a petition, “Save Scrabulous”, which has more than 600 fans who voiced their disgust over the threat.
Hasbro and Mattel is not against the development of the digital turnabout of Scrabble as the company too provide an online version of this game but also conveyed their hope for people to return to play this traditional game, sitting in front of a real player.
