“Why Spend the Money and Effort on Space?” - Stephen Hawking Speaks Up

Astrophysicist Stephen Hawking was asked during a lecture at George Washington Univerysity on the 50th anniversary of NASA.”What is the justification for spending all that effort and money on getting a few lumps of moon rock?”

Professor Hawking smiled and said, “If the human race is to continue for another million years, we will probably have to go somewhere where nobody has gone before.”

Professor Hawking who suffered from ALS, a paralyzing disease, could only make minimum expression on his face to control a computer fixed to his wheelchair. The medium for him to transfer his thought into proper words is through a synthesized voice which picks his words from a computer screen.

But all these does not limit Professor Hawking to talk about his passion; the space.

The University of Cambridge professor, who made famous because of his remarkable theory on the black holes, strongly believes that the humans should go into space; suggesting the moon and Mars as the first place for the human to land on.

Professor Hawking suggested that venturing into space has more meaning than just exploring the space, in fact, it change the future of human race and determine whether we have a future decades to come. With that, he predicted that human will have a base on the moon surface by 2020 and a man will be successfully landed on Mars by 2025

When questioned if there is life in the universe besides Earth, Professor Hawking positively suggested an infinite possibility to that. There is infinite possibility in the universe; after all, there is life on Earth!
